Custom roll labels: core, diameter and unwind specifications

Rolls are a delivery format for different paper and film constructions. Alongside label dimensions and quantity, specify how the roll needs to fit your applicator or manual labeling process.

Start with manual or machine application

For manual labeling, discuss labels per roll around handling, storage and the quantity used at a time. For machine application, send the applicator model, its roll requirements, or photos and measurements of a roll that already runs correctly.

Avoid requesting only a “standard roll.” Core size, maximum diameter, liner width and feed requirements can differ between machines. Review them together before production.

Separate label dimensions from roll dimensions

Finished width and height describe an individual label. Core inner diameter describes the opening through the center tube. Maximum roll diameter describes the outside of the complete roll. Use millimeters or inches and state the unit beside each measurement.

Labels per roll must be checked against label dimensions, liner and the applicator’s maximum roll diameter. State total order quantity and labels per roll separately so the order total is not mistaken for the roll count.

Show which artwork edge comes off the roll first

Mark the top of the artwork, then specify labels wound inside or outside and whether the top, bottom, left or right edge comes off first. Include a sketch or a photo of a working roll to make the relationship between feed direction and artwork clear.

Suppliers may use different diagrams for numbered unwind positions. If you provide a position number, include its matching diagram and confirm it against the artwork and applicator.

A complete custom roll label brief

Include material or application, finished dimensions, artwork and design versions, total quantity, labels per roll, core inner diameter, maximum roll diameter, winding and leading edge. Add any machine requirements for label gap, liner width or label sensing.

Add the application surface, conditions of use and delivery destination. For delivery to the United States, provide the state and ZIP code. Production and shipping timing are confirmed for the specification in your project reply.
